Driven by math performance trends of local Black and Latino boys, University of Maryland colleagues Lawrence M. Clark and Stephanie Timmons-Brown envisioned a different summer enrichment experience for local middle school boys that was engaging, affirming, and supported their math development. They launched “Mathletics” in 2014, a summer camp designed to make math and statistics engaging through sports.

Starting with limited resources and immense dedication, they built a program that garnered support from the Mathematics Association of America and the National Security Agency, eventually welcoming girls in 2017. Over time, students showed increased interest in advanced math and STEM careers. The program’s philosophy evolved, recognizing sports as a powerful bridge to academic success. Their perseverance culminated in a $1.7M National Science Foundation grant in 2020, enabling expansion to Coppin State University. With continued collaboration, Mathletics strives to inspire and empower youth and support their future in STEM.
