The Choice Investigations activity allows students to explore sports-related statistical questions they develop themselves. Students collect data, perform data analysis, and create visualizations to answer their questions. Components of the activity include:
- Objectives: Students work on self-selected statistical questions, data collection, and creating visualizations. They also reflect on their project goals to identify the subsequent steps for data analysis.
- Incorporating Concepts: Students incorporate at least three concepts learned in the camp in their data analysis. These concepts may include proportions, percentages, linear or non-linear trends (scatterplots), methods of central tendency (mean, median, and mode), and correlation vs. causation.
- Creating Visualizations: An important element of the project is creating visual representations using graphs and making predictions based on graphed data.
- Summarizing Findings: Project includes summarizing and explaining calculations, results, graphs, and conclusions.
- Rubric: The Choice Investigation assessment rubric includes criteria such as stating the project topic, explaining data collection, using appropriate data analysis methods, providing appropriate visualization methods, and explaining the significance of the data to draw an appropriate conclusion.
